What is talking therapy?
Talking therapy is a conversation with a counsellor about your thoughts, feelings and experiences. It gives you space to consider what is happening in your life and what matters to you, without having to find an immediate answer.
Jane’s approach is led by you. She listens with empathy and curiosity, supporting you to explore your own understanding rather than telling you what to think or do. You do not need a prepared story or a particular way of describing your feelings.
A person-centred, integrative approach
Jane works integratively, with person-centred talking therapy at the heart of her practice. This means the therapeutic relationship and your individual experience guide the work. You can discuss which ways of working feel comfortable and what you hope to explore.
Some people prefer conversation; others find it easier to express themselves creatively. If words feel difficult, you can also ask about Drawing & Talking therapy or, for children and young people, play therapy.
Who are talking therapy sessions for?
Adults
Adults can enquire about space to explore feelings, relationships, changes in life or experiences that feel difficult to make sense of. You might know exactly what brings you to counselling, or simply want to understand yourself better. Jane will discuss whether her approach is suitable for your needs.
Teenagers and older children
Talking therapy is also available for teenagers and older children who can engage through conversation. Parents and carers can ask about suitability, consent and the arrangements for their child before sessions begin.
What happens before and during counselling?
- Make an enquiry. Send your name, contact details and a short outline of the support you are looking for.
- Speak with Jane. An initial phone conversation gives you a chance to ask questions and discuss possible next steps.
- Agree the arrangements. Discuss fees, format, confidentiality and the counselling agreement before starting.
- Begin at your pace. Sessions provide time to explore your experiences in a non-judgemental relationship.
